NOS Handle Story

After years of restoring, and hundreds of Tassies, I came across a handle that I thought was pretty special. It was a completely unused vintage handle from the 1950’s. I immediately noticed how much thinner it was compared to modern day handles - especially hardware store handles, it felt unreal in the hands - just like grandads old axe. What blew me away even more, was when I paid more attention to the tongue of the handle - as it had never had a head hung on it. I quickly noticed that the eye was specifically made for Tasmanian pattern axes, the tongue slipped PERFECTLY into every single Tasmanian pattern head I had. This is what started my quest to replicate a true Tasmanian axe handle in today's society, as Tasmanian heads become more scarce and treasured. So if you’ve got a prized Tassie head in your collection, and you want a handle that does it justice, this is the obvious choice.

  • One of a Kind

Spotted gum is a wild timber. Colours shift from pale sandy brown to deep chocolate and sometimes dark red — and no two handles will ever look the same. That variation is natural, not a defect, and it has zero effect on strength or performance. We pick handles randomly, so if you've got your heart set on a specific colour, reach out and we'll do our best.

  • A-Grade Only

We don't tier our product. Every handle we sell meets a single premium standard — the best one. No seconds, no B-grades, no offcuts dressed up as deals. If it's on the site, it's passed our bar.

Structural fault or breakage? We'll replace it, no runaround. What we don't cover: misuse, and handles that weren't hung correctly — we may ask for photos to confirm the fit.

FAQs

How much does shipping cost to the US and Canada?

Nothing — free shipping to the US and Canada is already factored into the price of every Sweet Spott axe handle. No hidden fees, no surprise charges at checkout. What you see is what you pay. We've built it this way to keep things simple for our customers, and it also means bulk discounts are genuinely fair — when you buy multiple handles, the saving is real, with no freight costs quietly eating into it.

How long does shipping take?

Faster than you'd expect from an Australian brand. We ship through a trusted US-based dispatcher, so once your spotted gum axe handle is in our system, it's a simple domestic shipment — typically arriving within 7 business days. Every order is tracked and you'll receive a tracking number once dispatched.

What is spotted gum and why is it used for axe handles?

Spotted gum (Corymbia maculata) is an Australian native hardwood that's been the material of choice for axe handles and striking tool handles in Australia for over a century. It's prized for its exceptional toughness, shock resistance, and interlocked grain — properties that let it absorb the repeated impact of axe work without cracking or splintering. In the same way North American woodworkers trust hickory for axe handles, Australians have always relied on spotted gum. The Sweet Spott handle is made from Australian spotted gum, locally made and finished right here in Australia.

How does spotted gum compare to hickory for axe handles?

Both spotted gum and hickory are world-class axe handle materials, and the comparison is closer than most people expect. Hickory is the benchmark in North America — long straight grain, excellent shock absorption, proven over centuries. Australian spotted gum matches it in toughness and outperforms it in density, making it particularly durable in wet or humid conditions. It's also significantly harder than ash, the other common replacement axe handle material. If you've always used a hickory handle and you're curious about spotted gum, think of it as the Southern Hemisphere equivalent — different tree, same result.

What axe heads do the Sweet Spott handle fit?

The Sweet Spott replacement axe handle is sized and shaped specifically for Tassie-pattern axe heads. It's not a universal fit — it's a purpose-made Australian axe handle for the Tassie eye profile. Like all quality wooden axe handles, it comes slightly oversized so you can fit it precisely to your specific head using a rasp or file. Not sure if you've got a Tassie pattern? Send us your axe head dimensions and we'll confirm before you order.

Where is the Sweet Spott handle made?

The Sweet Spott is 100% made in Australia, from Australian spotted gum timber. It's not manufactured overseas and finished locally — the whole process happens in Australia, from sourcing the timber to shaping and finishing the handle by hand. When you buy a Sweet Spott axe handle, you're getting a genuinely Australian-made product shipped to you in the US or Canada.

Do I need to oil or treat the handle after fitting?

Yes, and it makes a real difference. Once you've fitted your spotted gum axe handle, we recommend finishing it with raw or boiled linseed oil — apply a thin coat, let it soak in, wipe off the excess, and repeat 2–3 times. This seals the Australian hardwood, prevents it drying out, and keeps the grain tight in the eye during use. It takes about 20 minutes and significantly extends the life of the handle.

What if the handle breaks or doesn't fit right?

Get in touch with us directly. We stand behind every spotted gum axe handle we make and will work with you to sort it out — fitment advice, a replacement, or a refund. We're a small Australian business selling direct to customers in the US and Canada, and your experience matters to us personally.

What is a Tassie axe?

A Tassie axe (short for Tasmanian pattern) is a style of axe head developed in Australia, purpose-built for the dense native hardwoods found across Tasmania and the Australian mainland. Its wide, convexed bit and aggressive cutting geometry was a must for Australian timber workers for generations — and it's still considered one of the best axe head designs ever, eventually inspiring racing and competition axes that are used in timber sports today. If you're shopping for a replacement handle for a Tassie head, it's important to get a handle shaped for that specific eye profile. The Sweet Spott is made exactly for that.
