About Outbaxe

Outbaxe makes Australian axe handles the way they used to be made. A spotted gum axe handle, shaped for the Tasmanian pattern axe, from timber that grew in the same dirt these axes were built to fell. Made of Australian wood, by Australian craftsmen, specifically for Australian axes — this is the handle a treasured Tasmanian head deserves. Made to be hung once, swung hard, and passed on for generations.

A note from the workshop

It started with a Kelly Dandenong I picked up at a garage sale in the Hinterlands. Rusted head, split handle, ten bucks. I didn't know what I had at the time, just that it felt like something worth saving.

After restoring a bunch of Tassies myself, I came across an unused vintage handle from the 1950s, complete with original paint. Slipped it onto a Tasmanian head and it was like the axe came alive — thin, balanced, exactly how grandad's old one used to feel.

Tassie heads are getting harder to find every year. The good ones deserve a handle that does them justice, not whatever's available. So I set out to bring that original shape back.

Then some mates wanted them. Then their mates. Now they're here, for anyone chasing the same thing I was.
