The Outbaxe Story
Back in the 1900s, imported axes met Australian hardwood… and lost. Our trees are bloody tough, so blacksmiths and timber workers adapted the shape and grind until the Tasmanian pattern was born. After restoring well over 150 vintage Tassie axes myself, I’ve built a real respect for the history and design behind them. That’s what led me to develop my own handle — shaped specifically to suit the Tassie pattern and crafted from locally sourced, native Australian Spotted Gum. Along this journey, I've been surrounded by people passionate about the craft — the kind who’ve kept this culture alive through work, competition and plenty of long phone calls. Who would have thought that restoring a vintage Kelly Dandenong one day, would have evolved into Outbaxe

FAQs
How do I get my hands on a restored vintage axe?
Vintage axe restorations are available by private order only — we source and restore genuine vintage Australian axe heads and fit them with a Sweet Spott spotted gum handle. Every restoration is a one-of-a-kind piece. Because the heads are vintage stock, availability varies and each one is assessed individually before we take it on.
To enquire, just reach out to us directly on Instagram, with a bit of detail about what you're after — whether that's a specific pattern, weight, or just something unique — and we'll let you know what we have available or what we can source for you.
What is a Tassie axe?
A Tassie axe (short for Tasmanian pattern) is a style of axe head developed in Australia, purpose-built for the dense native hardwoods found across Tasmania and the Australian mainland. Its wide, convexed bit and aggressive cutting geometry was a must for Australian timber workers for generations — and it's still considered one of the best axe head designs ever, eventually inspiring racing and competition axes that are used in timber sports today. If you're shopping for a replacement handle for a Tassie head, it's important to get a handle shaped for that specific eye profile. The Sweet Spott is made exactly for that.
Why buy an axe handle from Australia?
Spotted gum is genuinely one of the best handle woods in the world, and until now it's been almost impossible to get in North America. Australian timber workers have trusted it for over a century for the same reasons you'd trust hickory — toughness, shock resistance, and durability. Outbaxe exists to bring that material, and that standard of craftsmanship, to customers in the US and Canada who want something different from the mass-produced hickory or fibreglass handles on the shelf at the hardware store.
Do you ship to the US and Canada?
Yes — the US and Canada are our primary markets. We ship all orders through a trusted US-based dispatcher, which means your Australian-made axe handle is a domestic shipment once it's in our system. No international freight delays, no complicated customs headaches on your end.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping to the US and Canada is free. We've factored it into the price of every handle so there are no hidden fees or surprise charges at checkout — what you see is what you pay. It also means bulk pricing is genuinely fair: when you buy multiple handles, the discount is real with nothing quietly eaten up by freight costs.
